Masoor dal is another one of my favourite dals. The preparation is quite simple and it always manages to hit the spot with me! One of the few dishes that come under the comfort food category.

Ingredients:
1 cup masoor dal (washed, drained and soaked for a couple of hours)
1 small onion sliced
1 green chilli chopped
2 tomatoes chopped
1 inch ginger minced
4 cloves of garlic chopped
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp asafoetida powder
A pinch of tumeric powder
4 cloves
4 peppercorns
1 bay leaf
1 inch piece cinnamon stick
1/4 cup chopped cilantro for garnish
3/4 cup of water
salt to taste
2 tbsp oil
Method:
Cook masoor dal with salt, ginger, green chilli and tomatoes in about 3/4th cup of water. Once dal is cooked remove from flame and keep aside.
Heat oil in a vessel. Add the cloves, peppercorns, cinnamon stick and bayleaf.
Once they darken add the mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Then add the asafoetida powder, garlic and turmeric powder.
After about 5 seconds add the sliced onions and fry till transluscent.
Then add the cooked masoor dal and add more water if desired.
Check for salt. Cover and bring it to a boil.
Add cilantro and remove from flame.
Serve hot with rice.
PS: I am sending this to Ashwini for the “Lentils Mela“

homey, me no likes masoor
i loved the way u took the pic, with it spread on a cake of rice n all!!
Last weekend i made your matar paneer! it was yummy, great gravy texture, only paneer was a lil less coz while i made gravy, i munched on the golden fried paneer pieces!!
You and Mandira are definitely long lost twins
Glad you liked the matar paneer. Even I finish half the paneer by munching on it…thats why I add peas…to make up for my greed

Masoor dal is my fav, as it cooks so fast yet its taste’s good. ur recipe seems to be different, as it calls for pepper..
Thanks Lavi. I usually add all the spices in hand cos it adds a lovely flavour and aroma to the dal.

i am not a dal fan..nvr was..dal had to be shoved down my throat as a kid…but generally dal-chawal is the more tolerable way of consuming dal for me…
i think masoor goes well with garlic tadka..
You mean just garlic tadka? I should try it next time. I love all lentils and pulses….If I turn vegetarian,I’ll be happy to survive on just those

We make it watery but I am going to try it this way, looks great like this!! Love your recipe too!!
This is my favorite dal, and my kids too. We have it many times a week, except when other dals are cooked for better balancing of nutrition
LOL…I love dals too
This is not too watery as my husband likes to have it with chapathis. And I like to have it with rice so its good for both of us :p
